Swindon Heritage Preservation runs a series of community groups within the Railway Village. One of our most active groups is the Global Gardeners. A team of volunteers who meet weekly to care for some gardens and green spaces throughout the Village.
Earlier this year, the Global Gardeners started a new project to transform a neglected and unnoticed plot of land near the Central Community Centre into a welcoming public seating area for everyone to enjoy.
A Community Effort
With support from the BUPA Foundation Green Community Grant, the Gardeners set out to create something new that would complement the heritage surroundings and offer a new spot for people to sit and enjoy the local area.

The Gardeners set strong securing bolts for the new bench, laid a foundation of ballast and installed durable plastic paving grids filled with pea grit. This solution not only created a stable area but also matches beautifully with the existing stonework throughout the Railway Village.

Throughout the Spring, our volunteers prepared the ground and began planting.
A New Community Space
By late April, the main planting was completed. Bright new greenery will continue to grow and fill out the area, adding a new splash of life!

Today, passers-by and visitors to the Railway Village are already enjoying the new seating area. Thank you to our Gardening Volunteers who made this project possible.
We can’t wait to see how this space continues to grow and flourish in the months and years ahead!
