SUMMARY:Walk the Works Heritage Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Works Heritage Trail guides you around Swindon’s beautifully preserved Railway Village\, through the Tunnel and around the former GWR Works – the original industrial heart of Swindon. \nIn the 1840s\, the Great Western Railway chose to site its locomotive repair works here\, in open countryside mid-way between Bristol and London. That decision changed Swindon forever. The first railway workers\, and the generations that followed them\, forged Swindon’s character and pioneered its evolution into a dynamic and prosperous industrial centre in the south-west of England. \nThe Heritage Trail tells Swindon’s story of pioneering ideas\, community initiatives and societal change through three themes:\nIndustry\, Community and Health \nThe Trail follows a circular route\, starting and ending at Swindon Station.\nIt is approximately two miles (3.2km) long. The route is mostly flat\, with one short slope at the Tunnel. \nJoin the Trail at any point – find your location on the trail map. Labelled circles indicate the corresponding information panel titles listed in this guide. \nLook out for bronze discs in the pavements that help direct you from point to point. \nThe design of the bronze pavement discs illustrate the Trail’s three themes: a rail track for industry; a needle and thread for community\, and the traditional serpent-and-staff symbol for medicine and health. The directional arrows meet at a mirrored pair of GWR motifs. \n\nJoin the trail and find our more here!

SUMMARY:'Why are we nostalgic about railways?' by Philip Garrahan
DESCRIPTION:Philip Garrahan will contrast Swindon’s reputation for railway engineering with its important social history. It was once a complete company town\, when the outside observer could be forgiven for thinking the GWR and Swindon were the same.   \nThe new town was built on a greenfield site with innovations in its Railway Village\, Medical Social Fund\, Mechanics’ Institute\, Art School and much more. Our modern nostalgia about railways may overlook how distinctive Swindon was in the age of steam. It’s now time to reset the balance. \nPhilip Garrahan is a retired university lecturer and is the editor of ‘Made in Swindon: a social history 1840s-1940s’\, to be published this year. \n  \nSwindon Heritage Preservation (SHP) Full Members – FREE Entry \nGuests – £3.00 Entry \n  \nBecoming a SHP Full Member gives you full FREE access to our series of talks for Railway 200\, along with many other benefits. Full Membership only costs £12 per year! You can learn more about Membership here (https://mechanics-trust.org.uk/membership/). \n  \nPhoto Credits: The GWR Railway Village – Martin Parry

SUMMARY:Swindon Arts Fringe 2025
DESCRIPTION:This external event is organised by Artsite People Places Partnership. \nSwindon Arts Fringe Festival\nSwindon Arts Fringe Festival (SWAF) returns to Swindon Town Centre for a second year and hopes to be even more successful as last year. The Fringe Festival focuses on inclusivity for curators and artists: giving opportunities for artists to find their place in Swindon’s vibrant creative scene and supporting them to freely exhibit\, some for the first time. SWAF24 saw over 95 artists involved in the festival and drew over 1\,000 visitors to the exhibitions. The Fringe is a truly collaborative event created by Theatre Square-based Artsite. As well as exhibitions there will be events and workshops to bring the arts to a wider audience. ‘As Time Goes by’ exhibition at Artsite will feature a performance by Rinky Dink. The bicycle powered sound system\, and a talk by artist Stephen Wright from The House of Dreams Museum will complement the ‘Outsider Art’ exhibition by SLART in Museum & Art Swindon. \nSWAF24’s collaboration with the Carriage Works was a huge success and the use of the building as an exhibition space prompted a lot of positive discussions and reactions. One visitor commented “Fantastic use of Armstrong’s Carriage works. A wide range of works from Swindon’s diverse and talented artistic pool. All showcased in an awesome venue. Well done to Artsite and everyone involved.” \nSWAF 2025\nThis year\, 14 curators have come up with a variety of creative themes and have invited artists to submit work. ‘Miniature Swindon’ curated by Leah Bevan-Haines asked artists to create tiny items that represent things\, places and people in Swindon. ‘Broken Britannia’ exhibition curator\, invited artists to express their unique perspectives – good or bad – on life in Britain 2025. \nVenues this year include the Wyvern Theatre\, Artsite in Theatre Square\, Swindon Central Library\, Mams Gallery\, Museum & Art Swindon\, Bert’s Books\, Swindon Hub and the Carriage Works. Entrance to all exhibitions and events is free. \nFind out more\nThe Festival runs from 16th to 29th June. With the Launch event is Mam’s Gallery\, Eastcott Hill\, on Friday 13th June at 7 o’clock. \nFor more information and a full list of SWAF25 exhibitions and events visit: www.swindonartsfringe.co.uk \nInstagram: @swindonartsfringe \nFacebook: @artsitepostmodern
